Marcus Spears calls out Tom Brady’s dual roles with FOX and Raiders: It questions the NFL’s integrity
When Tom Brady first joined the Las Vegas Raiders’ ownership group, people questioned the access he had to other teams courtesy of his FOX broadcasting role. Those calls are even louder after an appearance in the Raiders’ booth on Monday Night Football in Week 2.
Former SEC Network analyst Marcus Spears joined First Take on Tuesday to discuss Brady’s unique position. He took a hard stance against Brady, comparing him being in production meetings to Jerry Jones (theoretically) being allowed in one for someone else’s game versus the New York Giants.
“I hate it. It’s abhorrent for me, for his job. I love it for his team. You’re a 5% owner of the Las Vegas Raiders, sit wherever the hell you want to sit at,” Spears said. “[But] this should not happen with him being a commentator of NFL football games. It actually questions the integrity of the NFL… at some point, the Raiders are going to play the teams that he’s sitting in on these meetings.”
As Spears mentioned, there’s a lot of information divulged in conversations with broadcast crews each week. This knowledge helps them perform their live analysis on gameday, but can carry over week-to-week as well. Anything Brady learns is something he could easily pass along to his head coach, Pete Carroll. That’d be a tremendous advantage for Las Vegas.
This scenario comes into play this Sunday. Brady is on the call for the Dallas Cowboys vs. Chicago Bears in Week 3, and his Raiders host the Bears in Week 4. It will be interesting to see how things shift from game to game for Ben Johnson’s team because of Brady’s presence. Kickoff between the Bears and Cowboys is 4:25 p.m. E.T.
