Former Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been officially released from the Miami Dolphins, the team announced early Monday morning.

The former National Champion spent 6 seasons with the Dolphins after being selected 5th overall in the 2020 NFL Draft. Tagovailoa’s NFL career has been littered with injuries since his rookie season. In 2022, Tagovailoa suffered a concussion in Week 4 against the Bengals just days after a Week 3 back/head injury. He would return later that season only to suffer another concussion in Week 16.

Tagovailoa did bounce back in 2023 and had his best season yet, totaling 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions. However, in the last two years, the numbers have been steadily declining, leading to his release from the Dolphins.

Dolphins General Manager Jon-Eric Sullivan wrote the following to announce Tagovailoa’s release:

“I recently informed Tua and his representation that we are going to move in a new direction at the quarterback position and will be releasing him after the start of the new league year.

“As I shared with Tua, I have great respect for the person and player he is. On behalf of the Miami Dolphins, I expressed our gratitude for his many contributions, both on the field and in the community, during his six seasons in Miami.”
