Quinn Ewers made some personal history on Sunday afternoon for the Miami Dolphins, and his historical moment included a fellow SEC alum.

The former Texas quarterback fired the first touchdown pass of his NFL career, a 63-yard strike to former Mizzou and Oklahoma wide receiver Theo Wease Jr. during the first quarter of the Dolphins’ home game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It came on a 3rd-and-8 play, as Ewers easily found Wease all alone down the left sideline.

Wease went untouched after catching the pass at about the Buccaneers’ 42-yard line, streaking into the end zone to tie Sunday’s game at 7-7. Not only was it Ewers’ first TD pass as a pro, it was also Miami’s longest pass play of the season.

Ewers, who spent 3 years at Texas from 2022-24 after starting his collegiate career at Ohio State in 2021, was a 7th-round draft pick by the Dolphins last spring and made his first career NFL start last week in a home loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. Miami benched starting QB and former Alabama star Tua Tagovailoa, giving Ewers a shot to show what he can do.

During the first half on Sunday, Ewers showed quite a bit, hooking up with the fellow rookie Wease, who went undrafted in 2025 after spending 2 years at Mizzou and the previous 4 years at Oklahoma.

Ewers didn’t stop at just that one touchdown pass on Sunday though. He added an 11-yard TD pass to Greg Dulcich late in the 2nd quarter to give the Dolphins a 17-7 lead at halftime. It was a breakout performance for Ewers even just in the first 30 minutes, with still a whole 2nd half to play.
