Raiders reportedly place Brock Bowers on IR, ending a bid for a historic season

Las Vegas Raiders tight end Brock Bowers is being placed on injured reserve, according to multiple reports. The move officially ends his season.
According to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, Bowers has been hampered by a knee injury since the opening week of the season. With Las Vegas out of the Playoff picture and in a battle with the New York Giants for the top pick in next year’s draft, the decision was made to shut Bowers down and get him ready for next season.
However, while Bowers recovers, a record-setting season is cut short.
Entering Sunday’s game against the Giants, Bowers stands 21 receptions short of passing Justin Jefferson (196), Amon-Ra St. Brown (196), and Michael Thomas (196) for the most receptions by a player in his first 2 seasons in NFL history. He also needed just 107 receiving yards over the team’s final 2 games to pass Mike Ditka (1,980) for the most receiving yards by a tight end in his first 2 seasons in NFL history.
On the shelf, Bowers will fall short of both records.
Bowers was named to a second straight Pro Bowl earlier this week. The former Georgia star ranks third among NFL tight ends this season in touchdowns, eighth in yards, and ninth in receptions despite appearing in just 12 games.
He had 5 catches for 33 yards and a touchdown last Sunday in the loss to the Houston Texans. Bowers will end his sophomore campaign with 64 receptions for 680 yards and 7 scores.
