Sauce Gardner is in the mix to be the first defensive back chosen in the NFL Draft on Thursday night, and the Cincinnati Bearcats’ star has the jewelry to back up his expected high pick. Gardner leading up to the big event showed off an outrageous chain featuring his nickname.

Gardner and LSU’s Derek Stingley Jr. are expected to be the first 2 cornerbacks off the board Thursday as early as No. 4 to the New York Jets, as some mock drafts have suggested.

Gardner, a native of Detroit, Michigan, was a consensus All-American, and unanimous American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Gardner is arguably the best cover corner in America, and did not given up a touchdown out of his 1,000-plus career coverage snaps with only 13 catches for 117 yards allowed this season, according to PFF College.

Gardner has been an elite corner for much of his college career.

Gardner was a first-team All-American Athletic Conference selection in 2019, as he returned 2 of his 3 interceptions for touchdowns, broke up 8 passes and made 31 stops in 14 games (6 starts). Gardner collected 28 tackles, three interceptions and six pass breakups as a sophomore in nine games (missed the bowl game vs. Georgia due to a back injury) in 2020 to earn second-team Associated Press All-American and American Athletic Conference accolades.
