Former Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford has turned in what many would consider a Hall of Fame-caliber career in the National Football League, and Los Angeles Rams coach Sean McVay hopes that Stafford doesn’t want to start his 5-year clock toward induction anytime soon.
McVay, who signed a multi-year contract extension earlier Monday, spoke to the Associated Press’ Greg Beacham about Stafford – saying “I’m keeping my fingers crossed like you guys that he still wants to go play.”
Stafford, 37, faces what would be an 18th NFL season after turning in a potential MVP campaign in 2025 that included a league-best 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns. But the Rams’ quest to return to the Super Bowl fell short against the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game, and Stafford said after the loss that he would “figure all that kind of stuff out with some time.”
Stafford has passed for 64,516 yards and 423 touchdowns in his NFL career. His 65% completion rate in 2025 was better than his 63.5% career rate, and his 109.2 QBR bested his 92.4 career QBR.
Stafford, who is under contract with the Rams through 2026, dealt with an aggravated disc in his back during the preseason – causing him to miss the first part of training camp and to require epidural injections.
