Katie Ledecky made history at the Olympic Games on Wednesday with a performance for the ages.

Ledecky won her first gold medal of the Paris games in the 1,500-meter swimming freestyle. She now has 12 medals in four Olympics, tying Americans Jenny Thompson, Dara Torres and Natalie Coughlin and Australian Emma McKeon. Ledecky will have the chance to add to her medal count in the 4×200 freestyle relay (Thursday) and 800 freestyle (Friday).

Ledecky was so dominant in the 1,500 that NBC had to adjust its camera angle to show just how much of a lead she had on the other swimmers.

Ledecky gave Americans lots to cheer about on Wednesday. The Olympics are a time when many fandoms come together to pull for Team USA, but one conference is being called out for trying to claim Ledecky.

The ACC’s official X account made a post celebrating Ledecky’s win. Ledecky swam at Stanford. The prestigious university found an athletic home in the ACC for 2024 and beyond as the Pac-12 dissolved last year.

Stanford, though, is not officially an ACC member until Friday. The ACC cannot reasonably claim that Ledecky was “made here” as the conference’s hashtag suggests.

As expected, the ACC’s post was met with ridicule:

One could argue the SEC would have a stronger case to claim Ledecky. She is currently a volunteer coach for the Florida swim team. Ledecky trains at UF and gave her “Florida Boys” a shoutout on Wednesday.

Plenty of American sports fans will be watching Thursday to see if Ledecky can grab her 13th medal!
