Byron Cowart is looking for a new NFL opportunity. The New England Patriots announced Friday that they have released the defensive lineman entering his fourth NFL season.

Cowart, 26, was selected by New England in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. In his first 2 seasons, Cowart played in 19 games with 14 starts. He spent the entire 2021 season, however, sidelined on the Reserve/PUP List. Cowart has recorded 29 total tackles, a sack and a pass defended in his professional career.

Cowart was a 5-star recruit, the No. 3 prospect overall on the 247Sports Composite for the class of 2015. He signed with Auburn over 27 other scholarship offers. After 2 seasons with the Tigers, Cowart left the program in September 2017.

After leaving Auburn, Cowart went back home to Florida and enrolled at Hillsborough Community College for academic purposes. From there, he transferred to Maryland, joining the Terrapins for the 2018 season.
