Bill Belichick accepts North Carolina head coaching job: ‘The deal is done’

Bill Belichick is taking the North Carolina head coaching job. The legendary NFL coach’s absence from the sidelines will end after 1 season.
Inside Carolina reported Wednesday afternoon that Belichick was finalizing a deal with UNC. Later Wednesday, further developments were reported by prominent national outlets. According to NFL Media insider Ian Rapoport, “the deal is done.”
Belichick to Chapel Hill has sent shockwaves across the college and pro football orbits. A 6-time Super Bowl winner, Belichick is considered the most accomplished coach in NFL history. He was expected to be in the mix for a number of pro jobs upon the completion of the 2024 NFL regular season.
Until now, Belichick has only worked in pro football. He got his start in 1975 as a special assistant to the Baltimore Colts. He coached through the 2023 season, notching a record of 302-165, including a 266-121 mark in his legendary tenure with the New England Patriots.
Belichick has a family connection to North Carolina. His father, Steve Belichick, was a UNC assistant in the 1950s.
At 72 years old, Belichick will be the oldest active coach in college football. The title was held by his Carolina predecessor, Mack Brown, who is 73.
