Bill Belichick contract details for North Carolina HC job reportedly revealed
Bill Belichick will be the next head coach at North Carolina. The NFL legend is officially making his first move over to the college ranks and will take over for Mack Brown.
With the deal being official, we now know the specifics of the financials. Belichick reportedly signed a 3-year deal worth $30 million.
Belichick immediately vaults him near the top of the list of highest-paid coaches. Only 7 college coaches make at least 10 million: Kirby Smart, Dabo Swinney, Steve Sarkisian, Lincoln Riley, Ryan Day, Mike Norvell, and Kalen DeBoer. Belichick will be tied with Norvell as the 2nd highest-paid coach in the ACC behind Swinney.
The coach may not have any college experience, but he is one of the most accomplished football coaches of all time. Belichick was the HC of the New England Patriots from 2000-23 and won 6 Super Bowls during that time. Only Don Shula and George Halas have more wins as a HC in the NFL.
Friedlander: Hiring Bill Belichick to coach UNC is a disaster waiting to happen
After the 2023 season, Belichick and the Patriots mutually agreed to part ways. The coach did not land a new gig during the 2024 season, but that hiatus is now officially over.
At North Carolina, Belichick will take over for the legendary Mack Brown. Brown was fired after the Tar Heels finished the 2024 regular season with a 6-6 record. Overall, Brown went 44-33 during his most recent tenure at the helm in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels have not collected double-digit wins since 2015. It will be interesting to see if the Belichick hire will translate to previously unreached success for the Tar Heels.
