NIU head coach Thomas Hammock has emotional postgame interview after upset win over Notre Dame
NIU head coach Thomas Hammock let his emotions show after a stunning 16-14 win over No. 5 Notre Dame in South Bend on Saturday.
The Huskies were an overwhelming underdog coming into this one. Instead, they picked up their biggest win in program history behind a 31-yard Canon Woodill field goal with 31 seconds left and a blocked long field goal. They had never beaten a Top 10 opponent before Saturday.
“All these guys that have been with our program, been through the ups and downs, and they continue to fight, it’s just like they’re my kids,” Hammock told NBC Sports through tears after the game. “I’m happy for them. They push through, no matter the situation. I mean, I just couldn’t be more proud.”
NIU is now 2-0. It hosts Buffalo on Sept. 21.
Meanwhile, the Irish have suffered a massive blow to their College Football Playoff at-large hopes just 2 weeks into the season. They will look to get back on track against Purdue in Week 3.
