Notre Dame took the fight right to unbeaten Navy in the first half of Saturday’s battle at MetLife Stadium.

The 12th-ranked Irish scored on their opening possession, forced a fumble on Navy’s first 2 possessions, and opened up a 14-0 lead on the Midshipmen at the end of the first. Navy quarterback Blake Horvath broke a 47-yard run early in the second to claw his team back to within a possession, but Notre Dame had an immediate response.

After modest gains on first and second down, Notre Dame tailback Jeremiyah Love rumbled 64 yards to restore Notre Dame’s 14-point lead.

Through its first 4 drives of the game, Notre Dame gained 183 yards on 23 plays (8.0 per play). Love would add his second rushing score of the day on Notre Dame’s sixth possession to put the Irish up 28-7.

Navy entered the game with just 2 turnovers in its first 6 games. With a plus-12 turnover margin on the year, Navy had largely built its 6-0 start on punishing teams for mistakes and shredding them with a brutally efficient offense. Three fumbles in the first half against the Irish completely flipped the game script.
