Jeremiah Smith and Ohio State are off and running vs. Tennessee, breaking through with a touchdown on the game’s first possession Saturday night.

The Buckeyes and Vols are capping the first round of the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff in a showdown of epic proportions. Ohio State opened with the ball, and it initially looked like Tennessee would get off the field quickly.

Facing a 3rd-and-2 inside their own territory, the Buckeyes saw quarterback Will Howard initially wrapped up behind the line of scrimmage. Unfortunately for the Vols, Bryson Eason was flagged for a facemask, giving the Buckeyes 15 yards and a fresh set of downs.

After that, Ohio State found its footing with some big plays in the passing game. A 21-yard pickup to TreVeyon Henderson converted a 2nd-and-16 and put Ohio State in Tennessee territory, setting the stage for Smith.

The Vols left Smith in a one-on-one situation, and that’s a matchup Howard will take with the star freshman. The QB lofted a beautiful deep ball, and Smith was there for the 37-yard grab.

Take a look:

It wasn’t a super efficient start to the drive from Ohio State, but Howard showed just how dangerous the offense can be. He went 3-for-4 for 66 yards on the opening drive with the Buckeyes ripping off the 2 big plays.

We’ll see if Ohio State can keep it up against the Vol defense.
