Brent Venables likes Jackson Arnold a lot. Just not enough right now to be Oklahoma’s starting quarterback.

During Monday’s coaches show in the aftermath of the Sooners’ disappointing 34-3 loss to top-ranked Texas in the Red River Rivalry, Venables revealed that he’s sticking with freshman Michael Hawkins Jr. as the starting QB, much to many Sooners fans’ dismay.

On Tuesday, Venables said there have been discussions about redshirting Arnold this season, but he wouldn’t reveal yet if the Sooners would go through with it.

“He wants to be the starting quarterback at the University of Oklahoma. … I feel like it’s only right to give Mike the opportunity, a chance to be the guy and have a body of work,” said Venables.

Arnold has thrown for 538 yards with 7 touchdown passes and 3 interceptions this season, but he hasn’t played since a Week 4 home loss to Tennessee in which he only completed 7-of-16 passes for 54 yards, with 0 touchdowns and 1 interception. Arnold was benched late in the 2nd quarter of the primetime loss in favor of Hawkins and hasn’t seen the field since, either during a victory at Auburn or Saturday’s embarrassing loss to Texas.

It sounds like Arnold and his growing fan supporters are going to have to wait a little longer to see him play for the Sooners — unless, of course, he does redshirt after all.
