Brent Venables’ Oklahoma Sooners are about to embark on their first season as members of the SEC. The veteran coach knows that the dynamics will change with this move, especially in recruiting.

After practice on Friday, Venables was asked about how recruiting will be different now that the Sooners are headed to the SEC.

“There’s great skill, there’s great depth, the lines of scrimmage are a real thing (in the SEC),” said Venables. “But, man, if you’ve been coaching football, offense or defense, you’re gonna try to build your team and your program and your locker room on the lines of scrimmage.”

Venables has done an exceptional job at recruiting for the Sooners thus far. The team currently boasts the No. 8 class in 2024, per 247Sports.

“You’re always gonna want for more, you’re always gonna build,” Venables explained. “Again, as I’ve said before, it’s never gonna be good enough, but I like where we’re at.”

The Sooners’ 2024 schedule will be tougher than what they’ve faced in the Big 12. The Sooners notably have games against Tennessee, Ole Miss, Texas, Alabama, and LSU in 2024. The Sooners will end the 2023 season on Dec. 28 against the Arizona Wildcats in the Alamo Bowl.
