When non-conference games are moved because of a weather event, especially one that’s unexpected the home team often tries to help out the visitors by adding a personal touch.

That’s exactly what Oklahoma did this week when the Sooners painted the “Green Wave” logo on the field ahead of the game against Tulane. The game was originally scheduled to be played in New Orleans, but was moved following the impact of Hurricane Ida, which caused Tulane to move its athletics department operations to Birmingham, Alabama.

“We’ve all got family, friends, fellow students, student athletes that are there and we have a lot of people that lost their homes,” Tulane coach Willie Fritz told the Associated Press. “We got guys on our team that weren’t able to hear from their people back home for a few days since cell service wasn’t functioning in New Orleans. It sounds like everyone is doing OK as far as our team and their families are concerned.”

Tulane will retain all net proceeds from ticket sales. The programs have agreed to find a date for the Sooners to play Tulane in New Orleans.
