Oklahoma needed some depth behind Jackson Arnold heading into the 2024 season, and probably some experience to help what is otherwise a young room.

Casey Thompson checks both of those boxes.

Yes, the same Casey Thompson who spent his four three seasons at Texas and threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns in an absolutely electric Red River clash in 2021. Yes, the same Casey Thompson who later transferred to Nebraska and spent a season as the Huskers’ starting quarterback.

He announced on Thursday that he’ll spend his final season of eligibility in Norman with the Sooners.

Thompson was a graduate student at Florida Atlantic during the 2023 season playing for the coach who initially signed him at Texas — Tom Herman. He tore his ACL three games into the season and was granted a medical hardship waiver for a seventh season of eligibility.

An Oklahoma City native, Thompson is returning home to play for the school his father, Charles, once quarterbacked. He’ll become the third player in modern history to have played for both Oklahoma and Texas during a career.

Thompson has 5,338 yards and 52 touchdowns across 33 games throughout his college career. He has completed 64% of his passes while throwing 24 interceptions. He also has 10 rushing scores.

At OU, he’s expected to back up soon-to-be sophomore Jackson Arnold. A 5-star signee out of the 2023 class, Arnold will be taking the reins of the Sooner offense as the program makes its transition to the SEC. He played in seven games as a true freshman and earned his first career start in the Alamo Bowl against Arizona.

He threw for 361 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions in the 38-24 loss.
