A prominent college football tradition is getting shelved for the rest of the 2019 season.

Oklahoma has announced that the Sooner Schooner will not be running again during the 2019 season. Oklahoma has home games remaining Iowa State and TCU which would typically feature the Schooner. The target return date is the 2020 spring game, according to comments Senior Associate Athletic Director Kenny Mossman made to OU Daily.

“We will repair the damaged Schooner and its future use will be for static display,” Mossman said in a statement to The Daily. “It is possible that it will be back at a game this season, but it will not run. We also are in the process of having a new Schooner constructed. There is no timetable yet for when it will be ready. I would anticipate having it in time for the spring game.”

On Saturday, during the Oklahoma-West Virginia game, the Sooner Schooner took a hard fall while cutting a curve a little too sharp late in the second quarter. The good news is that no injuries – people or ponies – were reported.
