Oklahoma basketball paid tribute to country music star Toby Keith on Tuesday evening before its game against BYU.

Keith’s passing was announced on Tuesday morning. He had been battling stomach cancer. A native of Moore, Oklahoma, Keith was a regular at OU sporting events and often sat court-side for Oklahoma basketball games.

In place of his usual seat on Tuesday night, Oklahoma placed a guitar, an OU hat and a red solo cup:

Tributes from around social media and the college football community poured in on Tuesday morning following Keith’s death. Keith had a memorable appearance on College GameDay in 2018 as he was the guest picker for Oklahoma vs. Texas in the Red River Showdown.

Earlier in the day, Oklahoma athletics shared this statement:

The OU Athletics family is incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend Toby Keith. It’s a profoundly sad reality to exist in a world where Toby doesn’t. He brought life and joy to every room he entered, and our hearts are dimmer today without him. An American icon and a stalwart Sooner. A superstar talent and a fierce friend of our program. We thank him for the unwavering support he always gave, his generosity as a human being and the countless smiles and memories he created here in Oklahoma and around the world.

All our love to Tricia, Shelley, Krystal, Stelen and their families. We’ll miss you on campus, TK. We’re crying for us.

Keith was 62 years old.
