Three Ole Miss players have been named semifinalists for major awards in college football this week.

Two senior leaders, quarterback Bo Wallace and cornerback Senquez Golson are semifinalists for the Maxwell and Bednarik Awards, respectively. The trophies go to the best offensive and defensive players in the country.

Wallace is in the midst of his best season at The Grove. He’s nearing 2,500 yards passing with 20 touchdowns. He’s completing more than 63 percent of his passes.

Wallace was also named a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, given to the nation’s best quarterback.

Golson, arguably the game’s best corner, has nine interceptions on the season. He’s registered at least one pick in the Rebels’ last five games. He sealed the historic win over Alabama with a pick in the end zone to kill a Crimson Tide drive. Golson’s recorded 28 tackles and five pass break-ups.

Defensive lineman Robert Nkemdiche is one of 12 semifinalists for the Lombardi Award. The award goes to the best lineman or front seven player in college football. The Rebels’ defensive tackle has notched 22 tackles and two sacks in nine starts, but has made his presence felt by attracting double teams.

Despite two consecutive losses, many around college football believe the Rebels are still one of, if the the best team in college football. Ole Miss plays host to Presbyterian this week, then are off the following week. Hugh Freeze’s team wraps up the 2014 regular season with a trip to Arkansas and the Egg Bowl.
