Ole Miss’ 30-day extension to release the NCAA’s notice of allegation have been up for a number of days and yet no information has been forthcoming from Oxford. The extension was granted when an unnamed individual involved in the notice requested outside counsel just as the 90-day window to respond to the original notice of allegations stemming from possible rules violations by the football team, women’s basketball and track and field programs was coming to an end.

Considering the Rebels’ stance that they’ve done nothing wrong and will fully cooperate with NCAA and SEC investigators, these delay tactics seem to fly in the face of those statements. Serving as a guest on The Paul Finebaum Show Wednesday, USA TODAY writer Dan Wolken expressed his frustration with how Ole Miss has handled the situation.

“We don’t know what’s in the notice of allegations,” Wolken said on the air. “Ole Miss has refused to this point to release the notice of allegations and I’ve been hammering them for it. The lack of transparency, frankly I’m not sure is legal. If (Ole Miss) were challenged in a court about freedom of information act I’m not sure they would win, in fact I think they wouldn’t win.

“Ole Miss has said they aren’t going to release the notice of allegations until the response is submitted. It’s been 30 days since they received their extension, you would think any day now they’d have that ready but their own tactic has been delay, delay, delay. In my opinion and just my history of dealing with these things, when people say ‘We can’ wait to tell our story, we want to be transparent’ and all that stuff, well then they just do it, they don’t just say it.

“The fact that Ole Miss has not released this information to me signals that it’s worse than they are letting on.”

This sentiment is in direct opposition to that of former college head football coach Rick Neuheisel, who said Monday after speaking with Hugh Freeze, he believed the Laremy Tunsil situation will go away quietly for Ole Miss. Neuheisel claimed the Rebels have answers to every forthcoming question.

If that’s true, Wolken makes a good point – why not just come out with it instead of continuing to delay the process?
