Greg McElroy is high on Ole Miss for the 2023 season.

McElroy ranked the Rebels at No. 15 in his way-too-early preseason top-25 this week, calling them a “sleeper” team for this upcoming season.

His excitement for Ole Miss mostly comes down to his thoughts on the offense and what Quinshon Judkins brings to the table in the running game. He rushed for 1,567 yards as a freshman last season.

“I think Quinshon Judkins is amazing. I really believe that,” McElroy said. “I think he’s one of the best players in America regardless of position and will only be better here in Year No. 2.”

Ole Miss also has options at the quarterback position, most notably returning starter Jaxson Dart and Oklahoma State transfer Spencer Sanders.

“If they can get the quarterback spot figured out, they’re in a great spot with what they have on the perimeter,” he added. “You go out and you get Chris Marshall, you go out and get Tre Harris, you go out and get a couple other pieces that are legit.”

Defensively, Ole Miss wasn’t as stout a year ago. But McElroy indicated he has some optimism for that group in 2023.

“Defensively is where you have some questions,” McElroy said. “Because it got off to a really good start last year. Things looked pretty dang solid. But it kind of went a little sideways as the season went along. They gave up 35 points per game in the final 7 games.

“I don’t know if they’re necessarily going to be a lockdown group, but if this offense can be as good as I anticipate, they have a chance to be very dangerous for every single team they play.”
