Ole Miss has now had two scrimmages under Lane Kiffin’s leadership and while progress is being made in Oxford, the first-year Rebel coach makes it sound like he’s still far from pleased when it comes to the competitive depth on his football team.

During his most recent media availability, Kiffin said he saw glimpses of good and bad from his team as he permitted tackling in half of the team’s most recent scrimmage.

“Made some explosive plays on offense, which again, is good and bad, one side not doing well,” Kiffin shared on Tuesday. “We are down a lot of players on defense – especially in the secondary. Got a lot of work to do.”

As expected, one of the first questions asked of Kiffin was an update on the team’s ongoing competition at quarterback.

“The quarterbacks both made some big plays and did some really good things,” Kiffin said. “Which is a lot of the explosive plays we just discussed. So, I’m very pleased with their production. They need to take care of the ball a little bit better. But like where they’re going with that.”

When asked to provide an update on the team’s offensive line, Kiffin couldn’t really give any specifics due to players being in and out of the lineup so frequently thus far during camp.

“We’ve got competition all over the place being the first year — it’s like pick out of a hat every day, you don’t know who’s gonna be there,” Kiffin added. “I get texts in the morning, you know, these three people failed COVID tasks and there’s more in close contact.

“So, I don’t know, it’s hard to even figure out where first and second units are because it’s changing so much.”

After previously suggesting it’s going to take three recruiting cycles to get his Ole Miss roster where he’d like it, Kiffin continues to caution that his program remains a work in progress.

That’s not going to be the message Ole Miss fans want to hear but that’s the reality facing many new hires entering their first season following this unprecedented offseason.
