Lane Kiffin is pumping the brakes on the Jaxson Dart as an automatic starter talk.

Kiffin has responded to social media chatter and pictures of Dart’s arrival at Ole Miss as a transfer portal addition from Southern Cal and reminded everyone that Luke Altmyer is still a valid quarterback on the roster.

“That doesn’t mean, ‘We did all this, it means Jaxson Dart’s the quarterback and Luke’s not,” Kiffin told reporters. “That’s just the marketing world that we’re in, the use of social media, especially Twitter.”

Dart chose Ole Miss over Oklahoma and BYU, the other 2 schools he visited since he entered the college football transfer portal Jan. 10. Altmyer, meanwhile, a Starkville, Mississippi native came out of high school rated as a 4-star prospect and selected as a top-five player in the state of Mississippi by 247Sports.

“We’re just trying to add players to positions,” Kiffin said. “Either where we didn’t recruit well at positions years ago here, or where people have left or gone early to the draft, too. So, there’s a lot of areas and reasons why you add certain things.”

As we’ve seen in recent years with quarterback play across the SEC, offseason predictions don’t typically pan out, so we’ll have to see what Kiffin and the coaching staff have in store for these quarterbacks.
