Matt Corral has been picked up off the waiver wire by the New England Patriots, Ian Rapoport reported Thursday afternoon.
The former Ole Miss quarterback was dropped by the Carolina Panthers Wednesday after spending a season with the organization. Corral was on Carolina’s injury reserve all of last season dealing with a foot injury, and with the Panthers taking Bryce Young No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft alongside giving Andy Dalton a 2-year deal, there wasn’t much room for Corral.
The Panthers expressed interest in keeping Corral on their practice squad, but the Patriots were able to claim the second-year quarterback before Carolina could pick him back up.
Corral, as of now, will be QB2 behind Mac Jones, who has been the Patriots’ starter the past 2 seasons. New England also has quarterbacks Bailey Zappe and Malik Cunningham on its practice squad.
Corral played at Ole Miss for 4 seasons, racking up 8,287 yards and and 57 touchdowns. He was drafted by the Panthers in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.
