Ole Miss coach Matt Luke addressed the media on Monday at his weekly press conference to discuss Vanderbilt, the Rebels’ opponent this week.

Luke said his team can’t worry about last season’s game where the Commodores hammered the Rebels 38-17 and shut down quarterback Shea Patterson.

“We can’t focus on last year. We have to focus on this year,” Luke said. “Shea is a different player. They’re a different defense now. They did a good job at mixing up the looks on him though. They had him not knowing where to go with the football. But we’ve got to focus on this year.”

The Ole Miss interim coach noted that on the other side of the ball, his team will have to find a way to slow down Vanderbilt senior running back Ralph Webb.

“The best compliment you can give anyone is consistency and he’s been a consistently good player for a long, long time,” Luke said. “To take the physical pounding in this league and to keep going, I’ve got a lot of respect for him as a player and a person.”

Luke said he expects his team to have a difficult challenge on Saturday.

“We’ve got to watch the tape and attack them where we can attack them,” he said. “But they have a lot of returning players, and we’ll have our work cut out for us.”

Luke added that he wants to continue building on the second half of the Auburn game, in which Ole Miss put up some impressive numbers.

“I think some of these young players are starting to grow up and starting to believe,” he said. “…We want them to walk out there with confidence. We want to build on the positives we saw.”
