Ole Miss defensive back Key Lawrence is no longer with the team as of Monday.

The DB announced his decision to redshirt the remainder of this season and presumably enter the transfer portal. Lawrence said in a post on X that he did it so he “can play a complete year” in his last year of college ball.

Lawrence only appeared in 4 games for the Rebels this year, which is why the redshirt is still an option. The DB’s last game action with the Rebels came on Oct. 5 against South Carolina. Lawrence ends his Ole Miss tenure with 1 tackle.

This means Lawrence will presumably play for a 4th school in 2025. The talented DB began his career at Tennessee, where he played in 10 games as a freshman in 2020. Lawrence then transferred to Oklahoma, where he spent 3 seasons, before transferring to Ole Miss before the 2024 season.

At Oklahoma, Lawrence was a productive member of the secondary. The DB collected 149 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 3 interceptions in 36 games with the Sooners.

Ole Miss has struggled against the pass this season. The unit is No. 81 in passing defense, and losing a depth piece like Lawrence won’t help. Players like Antione Johnson and Anthony Robinson III will likely be called upon to fill larger roles for the rest of the season.

The Rebels are on a bye in Week 8 after losing to LSU in Week 7. The team will welcome Oklahoma to Oxford in Week 9.
