Ole Miss DB, Oklahoma transfer, leaves Rebels to take redshirt for 2024 season
Ole Miss defensive back Key Lawrence is no longer with the team as of Monday.
The DB announced his decision to redshirt the remainder of this season and presumably enter the transfer portal. Lawrence said in a post on X that he did it so he “can play a complete year” in his last year of college ball.
Before yall think the worse lol. I Red Shirted so I can play a complete year for my last opportunity of College ball.
All Luv ️

Lawrence only appeared in 4 games for the Rebels this year, which is why the redshirt is still an option. The DB’s last game action with the Rebels came on Oct. 5 against South Carolina. Lawrence ends his Ole Miss tenure with 1 tackle.
This means Lawrence will presumably play for a 4th school in 2025. The talented DB began his career at Tennessee, where he played in 10 games as a freshman in 2020. Lawrence then transferred to Oklahoma, where he spent 3 seasons, before transferring to Ole Miss before the 2024 season.
At Oklahoma, Lawrence was a productive member of the secondary. The DB collected 149 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 3 interceptions in 36 games with the Sooners.
Ole Miss has struggled against the pass this season. The unit is No. 81 in passing defense, and losing a depth piece like Lawrence won’t help. Players like Antione Johnson and Anthony Robinson III will likely be called upon to fill larger roles for the rest of the season.
The Rebels are on a bye in Week 8 after losing to LSU in Week 7. The team will welcome Oklahoma to Oxford in Week 9.
Don’t you just love NIL and the transfer portal??? He only came for the money, so it makes perfect sense for him to leave. You can’t blame him though, it’s just the way things are in college football today.
He wasn’t given much playing time. 4 games in 6 games? I guess he saw the writing on the wall that Ole Miss defense wasn’t good.
Lol at anyone that doesn’t think that the Ole Miss defense is good.
olebmissbiebonebof only, i thinkn4 schoolsvto have a top 10 scorin offense AND defense
After several years, the portal is beginning to balance the football landscape. But its unrestricted usage by players who chase the NIL cash will tarnish the sport. Players should be able to improve their stock for playing at the next level. But, restrictions need to be put into place. How about this…
1. The first portal transfer comes without any restrictions.
2. Subsequent transfers, the player must sit out one season.
3. Exceptions would include coaching changes where the player could transfer unrestricted
Our defense is good. Everybody’s defense in the SEC can be beaten that has shown over and over again. There is no stop everybody everywhere defense anymore because of the portal. This young man is jumping ship which he is used to doing which means he has no heart in it or competitive Drive watch him turn back up at Oklahoma. Although they are not good they certainly can be.. players didn’t used to be able to do things like this and they shouldn’t be able to today they can discuss a red shirt with the school they are signed with not just run away. We’ll see how long it takes you to get a degree.. LOL you think you’re going to play in the NFL?
Understand your frustration with the season, but just let the young man go. He wasn’t going to be part of the solution, so it’s best for him – and Ole Miss – to just leave now. Staying with that attitude would not have helped the locker room. IMO
