Ole Miss taking donations for field-storming fine, replacement goalposts
The Ole Miss Rebels threw quite a party Saturday night after stunning the Alabama Crimson Tide for the first time since 2003.
Rebels fans stormed the field in masses, being aided in their journey from the stands to the field by security guards all throughout Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. The goalposts were torn down and carried through Oxford. Popstar Katy Perry crowd-surfed. Needless to say, it was an awesome night to be an Ole Miss Rebel.
Unfortunately, all of that fun came with a pretty hefty price. The SEC is going to issue a five-figure fine to the University of Mississippi for allowing fans to storm the field. The fine is intended to dissuade field storming and the safety hazards that come with it, but rather than take additional safety precautions the SEC felt the best solution would be to pad its own pockets (that’s a rant for another day).
The Rebels’ tab following Saturday’s chaos spans more than just the fine, however. Ole Miss must also replace both sets of goalposts in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, since you can’t really host an SEC football game without goalposts. New goalposts will add to Ole Miss’ financial burden, but I think it’s safe to say it was worth it for the celebration following the win over Alabama.
Still, Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork is calling for all Ole Miss fans, especially those in attendance at Saturday’s game/celebration, to help the university pay the fine with donations to the athletics department.

That URL once more is: RebelGiving.com. It’s safe to say if Rebels fans are as united in this fundraising effort as they were all day (and night) on Saturday, it shouldn’t take long to raise the money.
