The Ole Miss Rebels suffered a fatal second loss in 2014 when they fell to Auburn last weekend, and as a result the Rebels took their expected tumble in the newest College Football Playoff Top 25, released Tuesday night.
Ole Miss fell from No. 4 in last week’s rankings to No. 11 this week, likely dropping them out of contention for one of four spots in the College Football Playoff this winter. The Rebels’ Top 4 ranking a week ago indicated the selection committee viewed them as a potential playoff team, but with two losses this season they now sit behind 10 teams in the rankings with zero or one loss on the year.
Two SEC teams did crack the Top 4 of this week’s rankings — No. 1 Mississippi State and No. 3 Auburn. They are joined in the Top 4 by No. 2 Florida State and No. 4 Oregon, which replaces Ole Miss in this week’s poll. All in all, Ole Miss was one of six SEC teams ranked in the top 10 in this week’s rankings, along with No. 5 Alabama, No. 16 LSU and No. 20 Georgia.
Ole Miss remains the highest-ranked two-loss team in the country, and it also sits ahead of a handful of one-loss teams from the power conferences, including Baylor, Nebraska and Ohio State.
