Ole Miss faced a porous Presbyterian run defense, but you can’t help but gasp at Mark Dodson’s numbers.

The sophomore rushed for 128 yards on three carries. Yes, you read that correctly. That’s a mind-boggling 42.7 yards per carry. Dodson recorded two touchdowns of more than 60 yards.

Dodson, along with Jordan Wilkins, provided high-powered performances for an Ole Miss team whose run game has been stagnant most of the season.

Freeze trusts junior tailbacks Jaylen Walton and I’Tavius Mathers, who have been around the program longer and are more consistent with ball security. Both are also more experienced with pass blocking.

Walton is the Rebels’ most versatile back, but according to Parrish Alford of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, it’s not a reach to believe Dodson and Wilkins could see more reps in the final weeks of the season with Mathers being relegated to a lesser role.

It’s tough to evaluate players in as lopsided a game as last week’s, but head coach Hugh Freeze has this week to consider his options as Ole Miss looks for a spark in the run game with Arkansas and Mississippi State on the horizon.

Wilkins had a team-high 171 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown last week. He and Dodson are bigger backs and present more of a downhill option than Walton and Mathers.

The Rebels rushed for 402 yards against the Blue Hose, which vaulted them more than 30 spots in the national rankings.

It’s been Ole Miss’ ability to consistently produce big runs against SEC-caliber defenses.

Dodson hopes, though, that coaches took notice on Saturday.

“It was a chance for me to again prove to the coaches what I have and maybe get a reevaluation from their eyes,” Dodson told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal.
