A recruiting reporter found himself in a bit of hot water on Monday.

Devin Brown is the No. 8 quarterback in the class of 2022 according to 247Sports. While he’s pledged to USC — which he has been since September 2020 — Ole Miss is looking to flip his pledge, with the Utah native taking an official visit to Oxford this past weekend.

Following the visit, Brown caught up with 247’s Yancy Porter and was quoted as saying that the trip “blew (him) away” and that he “loved everything about (his) trip down there”.

“Never met so many nice people in my life,” Brown said, according to Porter. “Their offense is (tailor) made for a quarterback. They have two of the best offensive minds in college football.”

There was just one problem: Brown and Porter hadn’t even spoken about Brown’s visit. Obviously, that didn’t sit well with Brown, who took to Twitter when learning of the quote.

Porter posted an apology to his own Twitter account later on Monday along with his side of the story.

“I made a mistake earlier today when I posted on the site that Devin Brown gave me a quote about his visit to (Ole Miss),” he said. “I implied in my report that I spoke directly with Devin about his visit to Ole Miss, but in actuality I received that quote from a third party stringer which Devin said he didn’t talk to. I should have never made the indication in the report that it came directly from Devin. I sincerely apologize for this error in judgment to the Ole Miss community, 247Sports and most importantly to Devin Brown himself and his family.”

What’s next for Porter, along with any further ramifications, remains to be seen. No matter what, this is an unfortunate situation for both recruit and reporter, and any relationship the 2 parties had prior to this has now evaporated.
