Pete Golding outlines how Ole Miss weighs building a team in current CFB climate
Ole Miss defensive coordinator Pete Golding was asked about his opinions on how staffs across the country are handling the many recent changes in college football. In relating it back to Ole Miss, Golding emphasized how recruiting at any level has to be all about the right fit.
“There has to be a connect of why they want to be at Ole Miss, why they want to play with Coach [Lane] Kiffin, why they want to be in a scheme that’s been successful and be around coaches that produce guys to the next level,” Golding said. “Ole Miss isn’t for everybody. There’s no smoke and mirrors, I appreciate that about Coach Kiffin.”
Golding added that his players do a great job of reflecting that, being transparent with recruits on official visits regarding exactly how the program is run.
He did go on to discuss how the timeline of the transfer portal works and the negative impacts it has had on undersized, underrated players coming out of high school:
“Developmental players that you used to take to add bulk and size to, you’re not going to have a chance to develop them because they won’t play as true freshmen,” Golding said. “Depending upon who’s in their circle, December hits and they might seek other opportunities. You’ve invested six-to-ten months that you’re not going to get back and they aren’t going to get back.”
I asked Pete Golding about the balance of traditional recruiting and attacking the portal as far as building a team is concerned. He gave a great answer. pic.twitter.com/TajKXH4Hk8
