Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze revealed to the media earlier this week that the Rebels will break into two teams to play a traditional spring game in this Saturday’s Grove Bowl in Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Or at least that’s the plan, pending the team’s injury troubles.

Ole Miss has endured much of the spring practice season with only eight healthy offensive linemen while players like Laremy Tunsil, Robert Conyers, Aaron Morris, Sean Rawlings and others rehab various injuries. Freeze told the media the team is now up to 10 healthy linemen, just enough to field two teams with five linemen apiece.

But, of course, if that number drops by even one, Ole Miss will be unable to split into two teams to play a traditional scrimmage and will then have to split offense and defense onto different teams and play first-team against first-team, second-team against second-team, etc., with an amended scoring system to allow the defense to amass points.

“I want a competitive game and for kids to have great energy and fun, and our fans to enjoy it,” Freeze told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. “I don’t know what it’s going to look like. I really don’t. But that’s what the kids want to do and I get tweeted about it all the time and emailed.”

The head coach also admitted to the media that there are stakes on this game. No, literally, the stakes are steak, at least for the winning team, while the losing team will have to enjoy hot dogs at the postgame meal.

The Grove Bowl kicks off at noon CT in Oxford, and Ole Miss fans will have a chance to see which team is the hungriest (literally) to close spring ball.
