Long before speculation began to bubble that Joe Burrow could force a trade if the Cincinnati Bengals selected him with the No. 1 overall pick, something that has thus far proven to be nothing but speculation and has not been supported by Burrow or his representatives publicly, Eli Manning did just that when he was selected by the Chargers with the No. 1 pick in the 2004 NFL Draft.

The former Ole Miss star at least took the moment in stride, posing for photos with then-NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue and a Chargers jersey, but it was clear Manning and his family weren’t happy with the franchise’s decision to take Eli with the No. 1 overall pick.

Not long after Eli’s selection in the 2004 NFL Draft, the Chargers traded the quarterback to the New York Giants.

During a recent appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, another quarterback drafted by the Chargers shared a story for the first time regarding the Manning family’s research into the NFL franchise before Eli was ever selected. According to Ryan Leaf, the No. 2 overall selection in the 1998 NFL Draft — who was ironically selected one pick after Peyton Manning, Archie Manning reached out to Leaf’s father to inquire about the Charger franchise and how they treated his son.

Following the conversation between the two fathers, Leaf believes it only cemented the Manning family’s desire to see Eli never play for the Chargers.
