Jimmy Johnson is part of an exclusive club, one that he started. A new inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year, Johnson was the first head coach to win both a college football national championship and a Super Bowl title.

Johnson led Miami to a national title in 1987, then guided the Dallas Cowboys to championships in both 1993 and 1994.

Urban Meyer will now be looking to join that club. After a lengthy career in the college ranks — which included winning two national titles with Florida and one with Ohio State — Meyer is entering his first season as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

During an appearance on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz this week, Johnson shared that he chatted with Meyer after the former Gators and Buckeyes coach took the job with the Jags. And Johnson said he had previously discussed with him the pros and cons of staying at the college level and moving on to the NFL.

“I think he wanted the challenge of professional football,” Johnson said on the show. “He’s accomplished everything that he could accomplish in college football. And so he wants the challenge of professional football.”

Meyer’s college tenure included stints as the head coach at Bowling Green (2001-02), Utah (2003-04), Florida (2005-10) and Ohio State (2012-18). He had a 187-32 overall record.

As Johnson indicated, it will be a challenge for Meyer to turn around the Jaguars, who went 1-15 last season and have missed the playoffs in 12 of the past 13 seasons. But it could be one that Meyer is up to handling.
