Although sports betting is now legal in some states, including Indiana, there are likely to be some restrictions and rules about gambling for some people in certain situations.

For example, one school is not going to allow its students to bet on its athletic teams.

According to the Lafayette Journal & Courier, Purdue has introduced a policy that will ban its students, staff, faculty and contractors from betting on the Boilermakers’ teams. It will be in effect by the time Purdue plays its football game at Iowa on Oct. 19.

“We really wanted to get ahead of this,” trustee Mike Berghoff told the Lafayette Journal & Courier.

Purdue is the first school in Indiana, and the first in the Big Ten conference, to put a sports gambling policy in place. However, it wasn’t the first in the country, as Saint Joseph’s has had a similar ban in its student handbook.

This could just be the start of more schools putting these types of policies in place now that sports betting is legal in more places than in the past. So, don’t be surprised to potentially see more of these popping up around the country.

Purdue’s policy won’t be in place in time for this weekend’s football game, when the Boilermakers host Maryland for a Big Ten matchup on Saturday.
