Carnage report: SEC ties its own NFL Draft record with 12 picks in first round
Before a packed house in Philadelphia, the SEC took center stage during the 2017 NFL Draft on Thursday night.
The SEC led all power five conferences with 12 first-round draft picks, which tied its record from 2013. Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett started things off as the No. 1 pick in the draft to the Cleveland Browns. LSU made noise in the top 10 when Leonard Fournette was picked No. 4 by the Jacksonville Jaguars and Jamal Adams went No. 6 to the New York Jets.
Derek Barnett broke Tennessee’s two-year draft drought when he was selected No. 14 to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Four Alabama players were drafted in the first round: No. 16 Malon Humphrey (Ravens), No. 17 Jonathan Allen (Redskins), No. 19 O.J. Howard (Buccaneers) and No. 31 Reuben Foster (49ers).
Florida’s lone draft pick came from LB Jarrad Davis, who was picked No. 21 by the Lions.
Perhaps the surprise of the first round was the Giants drafting Ole Miss TE Evan Engram, giving Eli Manning another offensive weapon in New York.
Since 2010, the SEC has had 77 first-round picks, 39 more picks than the second closest conference, the ACC.
