2018 SEC Championship game: The Matchup

Ever since the climactic end to last year’s national championship between the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Georgia Bulldogs, most fans have been looking forward to the 2018 SEC Championship Game. All fans everywhere anticipated the rematch of last year’s national championship, and this is exactly what we’re going to get.

Once again, Nick Saban will be facing off against his former assistant, Kirby Smart. Despite a close game in the national championship (overtime!), most fans expect Alabama to roll against Georgia in the big game on Saturday. Currently, many Vegas books have Alabama as a 13.5 favorite over the Dawgs.

Much of this has to do with Alabama quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, who has had arguably the best year of any quarterback in college football. Tagovailoa is anticipated to be potentially the Heisman winner this season as well. Tagovailoa currently sits at 36 touchdowns paired with 2 interceptions, and he played very little in the fourth quarter throughout the season.

Currently, Alabama and Georgia are sitting at no. 1 and no. 2 in scoring offense in the SEC. Alabama has averaged 49 points per game this season while Georgia has averaged 40.1 points per game.

Similarly, Alabama and Georgia are sitting at no. 2 and no. 4 in scoring defense in the SEC. Alabama’s defense is giving up on average 13.8 points per game while Georgia is giving up on average 17.2 points per game.

SEC Championship Game Playoff Implications

The nation will be watching on Saturday because the Alabama vs. Georgia game has major implications for how the College Football Playoff field will be set in the coming days.

It’s assumed that Georgia needs to win in order to get into the College Football Playoff. The more interesting scenario, however, is in the scenario of an Alabama loss. Many consider that Alabama can lose the game and still get into the College Football Playoff which would likely lead to two SEC teams getting into the four-team field once again.
