The SEC had no shortage of excitement in 2014. As usual, the conference showcased some of the most talented players in the nation and saw several standout seasons. Here’s a look at the five most enjoyable defensive players to watch in the SEC.

1. Shane Ray, DE, Missouri: Ray is the reigning SEC Defensive Player of the Year and for good reason. The junior led the SEC in both sacks (14) and tackles for loss (21). Ray had the size and speed to dominate the defensive end position in the SEC and provided “must see TV” on Saturdays.

2. Senquez Golson, CB, Ole Miss: Golson was one of the biggest factors in Ole Miss’ “Landshark defense.” The cornerback led the SEC with nine interceptions, including a pick-6 against Louisiana-Lafayette in Week 3. Golson also provided the Rebels with 41 tackles, including three for loss.

3. Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee: Barnett became the first true freshman in school history to start at defensive end in a season opener. The former four-star prospect exceeded expectations by finishing in the top-5 in both sacks and tackles for loss in his first season, earning All-SEC second team honors. Barnett has the makings of a star for the remainder of his college career and should continue his progression as a sophomore.

4. Vernon Hargreaves III, CB, Florida: Hargreaves was a true lockdown corner. Quarterbacks took notice and limited attempts to his side, which created interception opportunities for teammates Keanu Neal and Brian Poole. But the sophomore still managed to pick off two passes this season, while breaking up 13.

5. Landon Collins, S, Alabama: Collins finished as a finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s best defensive back. The junior has brought a veteran presence to Alabama’s defense, leading the Tide in both interceptions (3) and tackles (90). Collins is projected to be a first round pick should he declare for the 2015 NFL Draft.
