The first College Football Playoff rankings will be released Tuesday, but the most-recent national polls were released Sunday.

Who is overrated and still in the playoff discussion, though maybe they shouldn’t be? Who’s underrated and will have to beg for a shot at making the playoff rankings?

Here is a look at 10 teams that fit into one of the two categories:

OVERRATED

  1. Ohio State (8-0). The Buckeyes had a week off from their less-than-ferocious schedule. The only news out of Columbus was J.T. Barrett committing a big no-no by driving under the influence (not to mention being underage). He will have to miss the Minnesota game this week, but that won’t matter. The Gophers are – to put it nicely –bad.
  2. Iowa (8-0). If the Hawkeyes win out, and there is no one to really stop them until a Big Ten title game, Iowa’s schedule-maker needs to get a raise. Iowa plays in the weak division of a weak conference. And its out-of-conference schedule included Illinois State and North Texas. What’s the matter Hawkeyes? No MAC team was available?
  3. Notre Dame (7-1). If the Irish are going to brag about a victory over Temple (even though it was ranked), it shows Notre Dame belongs on this list. It still ends the season with Stanford, but they lost to Northwestern and last week barely escaped at Washington State.
  4. Temple (7-1). The Owls were a feel-good story until they lost last week to an overrated Notre Dame. Temple has another loss down the road against Memphis.
  5. Texas A&M (6-2). The Aggies dropped two straight to Alabama and Ole Miss and those were quality losses. But last week, Texas A&M edged South Carolina by seven. After the gun sounded, the Aggies acted like they had just beaten the New England Patriots. An overrated win.

UNDERRATED

  1. TCU (8-0). The Horned Frogs always will be underrated in the state of Texas because they don’t play in Austin. They will get their due this month. Of its last four games, TCU plays three teams ranked in the top 14.
  2. Oklahoma State (8-0). I could simply copy and paste the TCU paragraph, but OSU doesn’t play in Norman. The Cowboys play TCU this week in the nation’s best game not being played in Tuscaloosa. It also plays three of its final four games against teams in the top 14.
  3. Houston (8-0). Undefeated and underrated, we will learn more about the Cougars in two weeks when they host No. 15 Memphis.
  4. Memphis (8-0). When the Tigers go to Houston Nov. 14, it may as well be called the mid-major Super Bowl. Memphis looks even more underrated as Ole Miss keeps winning.
  5. North Carolina (7-1). After an season-opening loss to South Carolina, the Tar Heels have run the table through the ACC Coastal Division. It has a Tobacco Road showdown this week with Duke. Should Carolina win out and defeat Clemson in the ACC title game, they would sound a lot like the Ohio State team of last season.
