6 SEC teams ranked in way-too-early Top 25 for 2017
The 2016 season isn’t over yet, as the national champion will be crowned tonight in Tampa, but the Sporting News has already come up with a way-too-early top 25 for 2017. Six SEC teams make the cut, with Alabama leading the pack both in the conference and nationally.
- Alabama
- USC
- Clemson
- Ohio State
- Florida State
- Oklahoma
- Penn State
- Michigan
- Washington
- Georgia
- LSU
- Louisville
- Wisconsin
- Florida
- Oklahoma State
- Stanford
- Virginia Tech
- West Virginia
- Auburn
- Kansas State
- Miami
- Colorado
- Texas
- Tennessee
- South Florida
Alabama at No. 1 overall is no surprise as the Crimson Tide have dominated recruiting in recent years under Nick Saban and have been consistent contenders. In many polls, the most interesting storyline will be which SEC team gets ranked next after the Crimson Tide.
Bill Bender here goes with Georgia, with LSU and Florida not far behind. Here’s why Bender picked the Bulldogs as the conference’s No. 2 team in 2017:
Here’s the team that will be talked about than anybody else in the offseason. Running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel stayed in school, and Jacob Eason should make a big jump as a sophomore. At least, that’s what we’re counting on. Kirby Smart should be excited about Year 2. Bulldogs fans will be.
For his thoughts on all 25 teams, including the other SEC teams, the full article is available here.
Get Georgia off that list. The last thing UGA needs is a bunch of hype. I hope they win the national championship, but don’t want to see them with such high expectations that they somehow lose focus and become the 2016 Tennessee of 2017.
If your team is that mentally weak, they aren’t winning anything anyway.
Why is Clemson so high
Why are they so low? There’s a good arguement to put them at #1, but that spot is currently for Bama to loose. At worst, Clemson is definitely the second best team in the country.
You do realize Clemson loses its starting QB and a host of other starters, right??? Clemson shouldn’t be in the top 10 let alone 2 or 3.
Whether they win or lose tonight, Clemson does not belong at #3. They lose their entire offense.
Why is Texas ranked? Absolutely unreal. A&M is really bad right now but we would beat 5-7 Texas. They lost to Kansas. A&M hasn’t been that bad since Fran. Also, Herman is the next dennis franchione.
I’m not saying A&M deserves it, either. Also, Colorado was really disrespected. Charlie Strong is a terrible coach. South Florida was bad this season so why are they ranked? Inflation of traditional powers, I guess.
LSU at 11? Georgia at 12? Who came up with this? Georgia doesn’t deserve to be ranked and the jury is still out on LSU.
USC at two? These writers have to be smoking something.
Georgia and LSU are going into next season with momentum, A&M not so much. You guys are the kings of not showing up for the 2nd half of the season so If I were you I would be worried about A&M and not about anyone else.
What momentum.
They are on a one game win streak
Take it easy bro, this poll means nothing. We won’t if UGA that type of ranking until next year. Obviously they’re basing it on who UGA has returning. I’m feeling good about UGA year but I have a Missouri attitude aw well….in other words “Show Me”.
LSU did spank A&M and Louisville. I would have thought you could at least count to two.
Never mind on the South Florida point. They had Taggart. I do expect them to regress with Strong, though.
I’m not trying to be a homer but I seriously believe Kentucky will be in the top 25 some point next year. We return most of starters and we bring in a top 20 recruiting class. Watch out guys

Having Tennessee ranked–as long as Butch Jones is Hwad Coach–is an exercise in futility.
The man is the biggest fraud in college football.
