Three fatalities have been reported and many more were injured at the Oklahoma State homecoming parade on Saturday after a vehicle ran into a crowd.
The Associated Press has reported the three deaths, and Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed that the incident took place near Hall of Fame and Main Street in Stillwater, apparently towards the end of the parade route. Medical helicopters and other emergency crews were called to assist.
Police say the driver of the vehicle that crashed into the crowd of spectators has been arrested on a charge of driving under the influence. Stillwater police Capt. Kyle Gibbs said the woman’s sedan crashed into the motorcycle of an officer who was working security at the route, then into the crowd of people, according to the AP.
Gibbs says three people were killed and nearly two dozen were injured during the crash. He also said eight of the injured were airlifted to hospitals with critical injuries.
According to Tulsa World, witness Geoff Haxton, who was about 100 yards away from the incident, said a 4-door vehicle not affiliated with the parade crashed into the crowd. Other witnesses told him the vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed.
“This is the worst thing I’ve ever seen in my life, outside of the Oklahoma City bombing and 9/11. It’s a complete horror,” Haxton told Tulsa World.
Oklahoma State is scheduled to face Kansas at 3:30 p.m. ET today.
