Texas A&M has opened up its quarterback competition after back-to-back losses.

The Aggies started the season 5-0 and climbed as high as No. 9 in the national rankings, but have lost their last two games. They fell 41-23 to No. 7 Alabama and 23-3 to No. 19 Ole Miss the last two weeks, and are now unranked.

Starting quarterback Kyle Allen threw four interceptions in the loss to Alabama, three of which were returned for touchdowns. Last week, Allen was just 12 of 34 passing for 88 yards, threw 14 straight incompletions at one point and was benched in the fourth quarter.

Now Texas A&M is opening up the competition in practice, giving its top three quarterbacks a chance to show what they can do and looking for the one that gives the Aggies the best chance to win.

“We’ve made some changes offensively and how we’re gonna do some things and approach the game plan,” Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin said during his weekly press conference on Tuesday.

Jake Hubenak replaced Allen last Saturday, and completed 6 of 11 passes for 46 yards. Kyler Murray, a true freshman who was a five-star recruit, has gotten a considerable amount of playing time this season, throwing for 167 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 92 yards.

Murray was held out of the Ole Miss game for disciplinary reasons after reportedly getting into an argument with offensive coordinator Jake Spavital during the Alabama game.

“I’m not getting into the specifics on what happened on the sideline,” Sumlin said Tuesday. “But I will say that Kyler has done the things necessary that we’ve asked him to do, based on what happened on the sideline. Hopefully that’s been a learning experience for him.”

Sumlin plans to announce the starter on Friday. Texas A&M (5-2) hosts South Carolina (3-4) at noon on Saturday.
