Former Alabama quarterback Greg McElroy commented Friday that Jacob Coker’s performance in last weekend’s victory at Texas A&M won his teammates’ confidence.

McElroy was with Tim Tebow and in talking with reporters in Tuscaloosa in preparation for ESPN’s SEC Nation telecast on Saturday prior to the Tennessee-Alabama game.

“I think Jake’s doing a really good job,” McElroy said, according to 247 Sports. “I mean, Nick Saban talks constantly about winning the team, winning the team. Last year, when Blake Sims won the team, that’s when he knew he was his guy in the second scrimmage of the year. I felt like last week, Jake Coker won the team, I really do. And you could kind of notice it with him running on the sideline and lowering his shoulder.

“Now, I wouldn’t advise leading with your throwing shoulder against 250-pound guys, it’s just a little scary to me, it makes me a little hesitant. But I did see the response on the sideline by his teammates, and I think that cannot go unnoticed. I think he’s done a really nice job the last few weeks. He’s very comfortable, he’s starting to really gain some confidence, which is imperative at his position.

“I think his talent is starting to come to the forefront a little bit more because he’s not thinking quite as much. He’s running, he using his athleticism and he’s only going to continue to get better.”
