Six SEC teams made coaching hires after the 2017 season. The conference is unlikely to see that much turnover again after the 2018 season, but Athlon Sports is including two coaches from the conference on its hot seat watch.

Steven Lassan breaks his list down into categories of coaches entering the season on the hot seat, seats that are getting warm and those not on the hot seat yet. Vanderbilt’s Derek Mason is included in the “getting warm” category.

“Vanderbilt appeared to be on the right track after the 2016 season,” Lassan writes. “The Commodores won four out of their last six games and reached a bowl for the first time since 2013. However, the program couldn’t build off that momentum, finishing 5-7 last fall. Mason’s overall mark in Nashville is 18-31, and the defense (Mason’s specialty) gave up 43.3 points in SEC play last fall.”

Orgeron, meanwhile, is in a portion of the list with the heading “not on the hot seat (for now), but pressure will build in 2018.” Lassan notes there are doubts about Orgeron’s long-term future, but thinks the second-year Tigers coach likely keeps his job by going .500 or better.

“LSU’s 2018 offense is littered with question marks, and a tough schedule won’t make Orgeron’s job any easier,” Lassan writes. “A 6-6 or 7-5 season would only add to the pressure on Orgeron going into 2019.”
