If you’re planning to wager on the Iron Bowl, and prefer point spread bets, ESPN’s Chris “The Bear” Fallica has some numbers that suggest you should place your money on Auburn.
In a tweet, Fallica noted that “the last seven times Alabama was a favorite of less than seven points, the Tide are 3-4 straight up and covered only once.” UA is favored by less than 7 points (3.5) over AU.
People can make what they want of betting “statistics.” An Auburn bettor may believe it’s a sign that the betting public is a little too high on Alabama. An Alabama bettor may counter that the Crimson Tide being favored by 7 points or fewer are few and far between and mean little as far as what happens on Saturday.
As always, it’s important to remember that the handicappers aren’t necessarily expecting Alabama to win, but have set the line at UA -3.5 based on public perception to try to divide the bets 50-50 on the two teams so that the house wins by getting its cut (“the vig,” “the juice,” etc).
The last seven times Alabama was a favorite of less than seven points, the Tide are 3-4 straight up and covered only once. The Tide are currently a 3.5-point favorite at Auburn.
