Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma are the top three teams in the most recent version of ESPN’s Football Power Index.

The Football Power Index is one of a number of computer formulas that attempts to decipher which college football teams are the best in the country. According to espn.com, “The Football Power Index (FPI) is a measure of team strength that is meant to be the best predictor of a team’s performance going forward for the rest of the season. FPI represents how many points above or below average a team is. Projected results are based on 10,000 simulations of the rest of the season using FPI, results to date, and the remaining schedule. Ratings and projections update daily.”

Baylor and TCU have been two of the top teams in the country in nearly every poll, both computer and human. Baylor is currently 7-0 and ranked second in the AP poll. TCU is 8-0 and ranked fifth.

Oklahoma, though, is a surprise No. 3. The Sooners (7-1) are ranked 14th in the country and have one loss – to a 2-4 Texas team. But the FPI ranks them third, perhaps in part because they have averaged 60 points in their last three games.

None of the three Big 12 schools have played the other two, and their rankings will certainly change after they do. Oklahoma plays Baylor on Nov. 14 and TCU on Nov. 21. Baylor and TCU meet on Nov. 27, with the Big 12 title and a spot in the College Football Playoff quite possibly on the line.

Ohio State (8-0), the No. 1 team in the AP and Coaches polls, is fourth in the FPI, followed by the most surprising addition to the Top 10 – a USC team that is 5-3.

Alabama (7-1) is the highest-ranked SEC school, at No. 6. Clemson (8-0) is seventh, followed by LSU (7-0) and Notre Dame (7-1). Ole Miss (7-2) rounds out the top 10 at No. 10.

Another surprising inclusion in the FPI top 25 is Tennessee, which is ranked 11th despite a 4-4 record. The Volunteers’ ranking is probably helped by the fact that their losses have been a double-overtime defeat by Oklahoma, a five-point loss to Alabama, a one-point loss to a Florida team that is 7-1 and ranked 12th in the FPI and a seven-point defeat against No. 26 Arkansas.

The other SEC schools in the FPI top 25 are: No. 16 Mississippi State, No. 17 Texas A&M and No. 21 Georgia.

The FPI ranks all 128 FBS teams. Auburn is 35th, Missouri is 54th, South Carolina is 59th, Kentucky is 64th and Vanderbilt is 71st.
