Biggest Surprises of Week 5
Week in and week out, players and teams surprise us with their performances. We saw several surprises this weekend with a pretty good slate of conference and non-conference games.
Who or what made our cut of the biggest surprises of Week 5?
Missouri’s comeback in the “other” Columbia: My, my, my … how quickly the standings in the SEC East changed. South Carolina forced Missouri to punt the ball 10 (10!) times on Saturday night, yet found a way to lose the game. Actually, check that; Missouri found a way to win the game. It was a heck of a comeback by Maty Mauk and his boys. After sputtering offensively for the better part of three quarters, Mauk and company came alive late in the second half highlighted by a 41-yard pass from Mauk to Bud Sasser which led the Tigers to a touchdown a few plays later. Mizzou then all but ended South Carolina’s East title hopes with a touchdown on the very next drive.
Texas A&M’s comeback over Arkansas: What a game in Dallas, huh? Arkansas proved it can run on anyone with Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams combining for 226 yards and two scores on the ground. Credit Kevin Sumlin and Kenny Hill, however. After being held at bay for three and a half quarters, Hill made two clutch throws to tie the game and send it to overtime, after buckling somewhat under the pressure early in the ballgame and throwing an interception in the fourth quarter.
What Mark Stoops is doing in Lexington: I’m not saying they’re a contender, but each week it seems as if I walk away more impressed with the job Mark Stoops is doing at Kentucky. This team is a legit bowl team this season, and has arguably one of the better quarterbacks in the league in Patrick Towles. The defense is beginning to take shape under its head coach who is one of the best defensive minds in college football. If Stoops can keep his staff intact and can keep recruiting at the level at which he’s done with his first two classes, who knows what the ceiling is in the Bluegrass State.
Even in the loss, Tennessee impressed: This Volunteers were perhaps the most impressive team in the East this weekend, even in its three-point loss to Georgia. The offense racked up 401 yards of total offense, backed up by strong efforts from Justin Worley and Jalen Hurd. They’re still a year away, but Tennessee has a lot of talent that could compete with anyone in a chaotic Eastern Division.
