Week in and week out, players and teams surprise us with their performances. We saw several surprises this weekend with a pretty good slate of conference and non-conference games.

Who or what made our cut of the biggest surprises of Week 6?

Auburn’s defense shines in blowout win: There were a lot of things on display at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn’s 41-7 win, but it was the defense that stole the show. Auburn allowed just 280 yards of total offense and stymied an LSU offense that failed to get anything going with a true freshman making his first road start. The Tigers’ run defense continues to be stout, allowing just 3.8 yards per carry on the ground.

Kenny Hill’s struggles against pressure: After torching South Carolina on the road in his collegiate debut and continue his impressive play against Lamar, Rice and SMU, Kenny Hill has now struggled in back-to-back games when facing pressure. For the first three and half quarters, Arkansas’ defensive front was able to create pressure on Hill forcing him to throw in coverage at times. Mississippi State pressured Hill all afternoon on Saturday in the Bulldogs win. Hill attempted 62 passes and still threw for 365 yards, but threw three picks.

South Carolina’s collapse in Lexington: I’m sorry, South Carolina fans. After being dubbed a preseason top 10 team and the favorite in the SEC East, the Gamecocks now find themselves with three losses and its Eastern Division hopes nowhere to be found. Kentucky overcame a two touchdown deficit in the fourth quarter, and despite Mike Davis’ huge not running the football, the Head Ball Coach seemed hellbent on throwing the football and arguably cost his team the game.

Alabama’s third straight loss to ranked team: Don’t worry, yet, but it is surprising that Alabama has lost its last three games to ranked opponents. I bet you can guess the commonalities, too. That’s right; Auburn, Oklahoma and Ole Miss all run up-tempo offensive schemes and special teams have all been costly for the Tide in those three contests. The road doesn’t get any easier, either. Alabama still has dates with Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Auburn – all of whom pose significant challenges to Nick Saban’s defense.
