Terrible news to share on Friday as the same week a high school senior signed to play college football he died in a car accident.

According to Cincinnati.com, 18-year-old Bretton M. Fox of East Central High School in Indiana had signed to play for Thomas More University on Monday but perished in a car accident on Thursday. During his morning commute and driving on an icy road, Fox’s vehicle hit a patch of black ice before heading down an embankment and hitting a tree and a utility pole.

Fox’s former coach, Justin Roden posted this message on Twitter following news of Fox’s passing.

“I’m not in a good place after losing one of my former players today. I have read his last message to me over & over and it cuts deeper and deeper each time. You will forever be remembered Brett. My prayers to the entire EC community & especially the Fox family.”

Thomas More University also released a statement following the news:

“Brett was not only a great football player, but more importantly was a great young man. We knew that Brett was not only destined for a great career here at Thomas More, but that he was going to do great things after his time at TMU. Today our football family grieves with Heather, Kevin, Ryan and the entire Fox family. We are heartbroken over the news and will continue to keep their family in our thoughts and prayers.”
